The first catalog
The first catalog launches with the 1x1 single-speed frame.
Everyday over race day,
use over trends.
Surly's answer is steel.
Surly is a steel bike brand that grew out of Quality Bicycle Products (QBP), a bicycle distributor in Minnesota, USA. Its first catalog came out in 1998 around a single-speed frame called the 1x1, and the Surly name followed the next year. From the start, the goal was never a light, fast race bike. It was a bike you ride for years, load up, and take anywhere.
Surly built 29-inch mountain bikes, fat bikes and longtail cargo bikes early, back when those genres still felt strange. Serious design from people who don't take themselves too seriously: that sense of humor is part of what makes Surly, Surly.

Surly says steel is the best material for the bikes it designs and rides. Tubing is chosen for each model's purpose, and the comfortable, compliant ride that results is what Surly calls the “Surly Ride.”
Generous tire clearance plus rack, fender and bottle mounts. One bike that handles many jobs, from the commute to long tours.
No jersey or cleats needed. Just ride in your everyday clothes. A wide spread of sizes and wheel sizes lets riders of every build and purpose find their fit.

In 1998, when bikes with ever more gears were in fashion, Surly's first frame was a single-speed with just one.
The first catalog featured the 1x1 single-speed frame and the Singleator chain tensioner. Then came the all-rounder Cross-Check (2000), the 29-inch Karate Monkey (2003), the Long Haul Trucker touring frame (2004) and the Pugsley fat bike (2005), and Surly became the byword for steel bikes with a clear purpose.
Today's lineup rests on the same idea. The four models Rubi Workshop focuses on, Midnight Special, Preamble, Straggler and Disc Trucker, represent Surly's road-going range, from daily pavement to gravel and long-distance touring.

Pick your roadThe four Surly models Rubi Workshop focuses on.

Fast and comfortable on pavement, ready for the odd gravel stretch. An endurance road bike on big 650B tires.

The way into Surly steel. Flat bar and drop bar versions for commuting, everyday riding and light gravel.

Surly's gravel bike, built for where the pavement ends. 50mm tires and stable geometry.

Fully loaded, anywhere in the world. Surly's classic drop bar touring bike, proven on countless long tours.
Fast, comfortable,
and unbothered
when the road gets rough.
The Midnight Special is the endurance road bike Surly calls “road plus.” It keeps a road bike's efficiency and lively handling, but puts comfort first with a relaxed position you can hold all day and big tires.
It is designed around 650B×50mm tires and also fits 700C up to 42mm. Big tires soak up cracked asphalt, potholes and surprise gravel, and lower pressures give you a wider contact patch. For mostly pavement with some gravel, choose the Midnight Special. For gravel-heavy riding, the Straggler is the better fit.

Designed around 650B×50mm, fits 700C×42mm. With fenders it still takes 650B×50mm or 700C×38mm.
12mm thru-axles front and rear, flat mount disc brakes and a 44mm head tube. Standards that work with today's parts.
Three bottle mounts plus front and rear rack and fender mounts carry what a long day needs. Downtube shifter bosses are still there too.
Eight sizes from 40 to 64 cover recommended rider heights from 147cm to 203cm.

The new Black Cherry Fizz 700C complete is Surly's first bike to pair a steel frame with carbon. A Salsa Waxwing carbon fork and Teravail carbon rims cut weight and road buzz, while the frame stays chromoly steel.
The carbon fork still has three-pack mounts and low-rider rack mounts, so it can carry a load. The frameset and the other completes use a chromoly fork with rack mounts.

The first chapter
of Surly, a steel bike
for every day.
The Preamble is Surly's entry into steel bikes. It is made for commuting, city riding and everyday use, and leaves out features many riders never touch, such as adjustable dropouts and extra mounts, to stay simple and affordable.
A double-butted chromoly main triangle smooths out potholes and rough roads, and front and rear racks, fenders and two bottle cages make a rainy commute easy. Choose the flat bar for quick handling in the city or the drop bar for longer rides and headwinds.

Same frame geometry, different handlebars. Flat bar for mostly city riding, drop bar if you often go long.
XS and S use 650B wheels and a sloping top tube for lower standover. M through XL use 700C.
Front and rear racks, front and rear fenders, two bottles. Even with fenders, 41mm tires still fit.
Ready for the occasional dirt path. If you often ride gravel for more than 30km, we recommend the Straggler.

Surly also presents the Preamble as a starting point for custom builds. Its blog features examples like the “Impossible Preamble,” rebuilt with lightweight parts.
At Rubi Workshop you can take the complete bike as is, or start from the frameset and add the handlebar, drivetrain, basket and racks that suit your daily life.

Where the pavement ends,
the Straggler's
road begins.
The Straggler is Surly's dedicated gravel bike. Surly's engineers refined it on Midwest gravel, for riders who turn a wrong turn into an all-day adventure.
50mm tire clearance brings traction and comfort, and stable geometry keeps long days calm. It's quick enough that the paved ride out to the gravel never drags, so one bike can also handle the commute and light bikepacking.

Up to 50mm on both 650B and 700C, and up to 47mm with fenders.
The new Straggler moves to 12mm thru-axles front and rear and flat mount disc brakes.
Internal dropper post routing lets you drop the saddle on rough descents.
Two bottle mounts, one three-pack mount and rack and fender mounts carry your bikepacking gear.

Sizes 46 to 52 are designed around 650B wheels and 54 to 64 around 700C. Matching the wheel to the rider keeps small frames naturally proportioned.
650B sizes also take 26"×50mm, and 700C sizes also take 650B×50mm, so you can swap wheelsets on one bike.

Fully loaded,
anywhere in the world,
and still truckin'.
The Disc Trucker is Surly's pure-bred drop bar touring bike. It is made to carry heavy loads across continents and around the world on mostly paved roads, and its stability and durability have been proven on countless long tours.
It arrived in 2012 as the disc brake version of the rim brake Long Haul Trucker and was redesigned into its current form in 2020. Its carrying capacity and calm road manners also make it a great everyday bike for commuting and errands.

A chromoly fork with two sets of three-pack mounts, upper, mid and lower rack mounts, fender mounts and dynamo routing.
12mm thru-axles front and rear. The non-drive side is slotted, so the wheel comes out without pulling the axle all the way.
A spare spoke holder on the seatstay and a kickstand plate. What you need on the road, built into the frame.
Fits up to 1x 47T, 2x 50/34T or 3x 56/47/33T, so you can gear it for long loaded climbs.

The Disc Trucker uses 26" wheels on sizes 42 to 54 and 700C on 56 to 64. Surly treats wheel size as a fit decision, because changing it also changes cockpit length, steering angles and toe overlap.
Both wheel sizes take tires around 47mm wide, with the same clearance with fenders. 26" tires and tubes are easy to find in many parts of the world, which makes them a reassuring choice on long tours.
